Don't text and drive!!

The last two weeks have been nothing less then amazing watching my 88 year old grandma heal from this horrific accident we've been sharing with you. You have seen her healing process and after thinking long about posting this picture, we've decided if we can help save a life or make someone think twice about using their phone without a proper bluetooth,  then it's worth it.
When my grandma crashed, her scalp was ripped from her upper eye and face area as well as her head.
I personally have learned not to touch my phone when driving because I am guilty myself. Somehow I feel like my grandma went through this to save lives and to stop her from driving before she killed someone else or herself.
It was a hard lesson to learn but she is doing amazing and being transferred to a rehab tonight. She will be home in 2 weeks back to life as she knew it before.

Dial a Ride here she comes! !!

The word "Foodie". Your question answered...

My grandma should be dead!

I know it's a harsh title but it's just plain realistic. My grandma is 88 and passed out at the wheel last Monday. She hit the back of a parked landscaping truck and went through the windshield. Many of you are aware of the severity of her injuries. Broken ribs, fractured vertebrae, broken clavicle, her skin from her right eye was ripped away from her face and she was scalped. Surgeons spent 3 hours putting her back together and this woman who was and still is, so beautiful, now has huge facial and head scars with thick staples where she was put back together and reconstructed. She will live with a thick uncomfortable bulky neck brace for several months and it will be at least a year for her head injuries to heal.

Despite all of this, she began trying to write the evening of the accident and has moved upward and forward each day since. Yesterday, was one week since this nightmare happened and she was walking almost 100 steps with the aid of a walker and Physical Therapist. She is speaking to her friends on the phone, entertaining visitors, playing her DS game, eating solid food and simply defying all odds. There is no reasonable explanation as to why she is doing these things other then it's a miracle from God, mixed with her SPIRIT and love of life!

Born one of seven siblings, she was raised by an evil woman who never allowed her to call her "Mom". She was only allowed to call her Mama Rose. Mama Rose practiced a witchcraft called Brujeria, otherwise known as Black witchcraft. As a child, I remember visiting her home a few times and taking a rare peek into her black room filled with dead chickens and an alter that reeked of something very dark and bad.

My grandmother was never treated with love and many times was forced to walk the streets of Lincoln Heights searching trashcans for food. Mama Rose eventually succeeded in her life mission of turning all siblings against each other. To date, there is only one sister that my grandma stays in contact with. For a woman being so mistreated and unloved as a child, she became a better grandmother then she was a mother but for someone who was never shown how to love a child, she sure did her darn best!

Unfortunately, she never learned to trust ANYONE and keeps people at arms length out of fear of being hurt. Her two daughters, myself and my son Jacob are probably the only people she feels safest with and who have her heart. As I grew into adulthood and needed her less (financially) we struggled to figure out how we fit into each others lives but about 10 years ago, I moved in with her, she gave me the house and I now keep an eye on her the best I can. She's a feisty, spirited and VERY independent woman and although we fight and argue, we are the best of friends.

For about a year now, we have known it was time to take her license away and that maybe she shouldn't be driving anymore but the mere mention of the idea made her become angry and defensive. Aging isn't easy for her and I suppose losing any part of her independence was scary for her as well. She simply would NOT listen to reason and was going to do what she wanted no matter what! There is so much positive I hope to come out of this for her. My personal wish for her is that she can travel to different senior centers to share her story and possibly help save lives by helping other seniors make the transition from driving to taking alternate forms of transportation.

This little lady is as headstrong as they come and has had a tough life but that's why she is as strong as she is. She has NEVER let anyone or anything stop her from living her life to the fullest (even when she lost her teeth and went to the senior center toothless)! Everyday of the week, she is out of bed, hair done, makeup applied, dressed to the 9's and had eaten breakfast before I even wake up! She is my inspiration of how we should live our life and always make the best of every situation and whatever the good Lord dishes out to us.

The pictures I'm going to share are hard for me to look at but I feel it necessary to help others understand how quickly our lives can change at the blink of an eye. PLEASE think twice before you look at or send that text or answer/make a call without a bluetooth. Please don't put your makeup on while driving and just overall be safe this holiday season. No one is immune to accidents or death at anytime. My grandma will have her normal life back eventually, however, she will never look quite the same.

Thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully share this story and have Happy Holidays!

Love,

Sandy and Andi

Return of The Bates Motel

Bates Motel

Although 2015 is just around the corner, we can hardly wait for the deliciously naughty and intriguing Bates Motel to begin again. Here at home, we find ourselves wondering what kind of mischief Norma and Norman Bates are getting into as their many stalker fans lie in wait for their return. Our son, Jacob is a huge fan or Norman and often mimics him in his behavior and even his eyes and picture poses. He understands he is acting and not trying to be Norman but for mama here, it brings me that much closer to the arrival!!!

Here's our lil guys singing Mr Sandman

  3. After the death of her husband, Norma Bates buys a motel in the picturesque coastal town of White Pine Bay, giving herself and teenage son Norman a chance to begin anew. Shy Norman is reluctant at first, but with the help of his mother -- with whom he shares an intensely close relationship -- the boy begins to open up to others and make new friends. Some locals, however, aren't as friendly and welcoming to the Bates, who discover that because White Pine Bay isn't as peaceful as it appears, they are forced to do whatever it takes to survive. The drama series, from executive producers Carlton Cuse ("Lost") and Kerry Ehrin ("Friday Night Lights") and inspired by the seminal 1960 horror film "Psycho," explores the formative years of Norman Bates and how his complicated bond with his mother forged a serial killer.

Plus Size is still Sexy!

This last year has been a wonderful journey for me. I've matured both emotionally and mentally and have grown spiritually wise. I have also had a few personal struggles, biggest one being my weight. During the course of this last year, I started a secret affair, with FOOD! I'm ready to come out of the pantry and admit, "I am a midnight bingeaholic!" I'm not a big snacker or junk food eater but late at night, when the house is quietly sleeping, I creep into the kitchen like a teenager trying to sneak out of the house, and I binge on anything I can find that's of interest. My tongue develops this sensational high and I need to have a full balance of savory, fruity, salty and sweet. Before I know it, I'm on a foodgasm high and loving every minute of it. The next morning, I wake with signs of the previous night's rampage and run to the restroom to destroy all evidence. It's like a killer covered in scratches and blood only I'm covered in crumbs and food stains! Soon, the guilt sets in and I head over to the scale. Yup, damage! For months, this mental food frack has controlled everything from my self esteem to my lack of caring if my nails were polished or if I put on jewelry.
I was growing into this beautiful human being, I was growing closer to God, I was growing, period.

As many of our friends and family know, I am life and love committed to the most handsome and incredible person I've ever met, my Andi. It is she that smiles and looks into my eyes each morning and says "Good morning beautiful" during the day she asks, "Have I told you how pretty you look today?". Her tiger like hunger for intimacy makes me question, "Why? How can she still be attracted to me?" It is through her consistency and unwavering attraction in her eyes that I recently started to see in the mirror what she was looking at all along.

I may be 40 lbs heavier then I was last year but I am still just as beautiful and sexy as a woman. My confidence and self esteem slowly started to make it's way back and little by little I started to take that extra care again. I guess after awhile, you get tired of taking 20 selfies before you find just the right one that portrays who you really AREN'T. Got tired of trying to suck in my stomach or hold the phone up to the ceiling and angle down on my face to get the "Perfect face pic". No more sucking in my cheeks to look thinner (well maybe I'll still do that one from time to time), but in letting go, I found myself just overall liking who I am again.

Magazines, TV and Society in general glamorize and sensationalize being thin and even underweight. You realize the camera adds 10 pounds right? Can you imagine how much thinner these super models and actors are OFF camera? I am not saying there is anything wrong with being thin as long as you are healthy but wheres the Kudos for the Big Sexy Women? We too, can bring on the sexy. Tonight, I feel a lil flirty and that's alllllright. Please feel free to share your confidence as well.

Pictures posted below are approved by my love and slightly cropped only because we have some rescue dogs and didn't feel like having them in the photo shoot lol

Happy Sexy Saturday!!

Got Turkey?

We, like thousands of other Thanksgiving Over-cookers, were left with tons of food the day after. We sit around all day making turkey sandwiches, turkey taquitos, turkey soup, turkey a la king, turkey salad and before you know it we're walking around gobbling like a turkey and sounding like Bubba from Forrest Gump

This year we decided to try something different that we are considering adding to the menu for our catering and event planning company, Tophat's & Tutu's Events. We haven't found a name for them yet but its a croquette of sorts loaded with Thanksgiving dinner leftovers. We hope you will enjoy!

First, we added a 12 oz bag of fresh cranberries, 2 cups of granulated sugar and 1/2 cup of water to a pan and cooked on low for 30 to 40 minutes.

While cooking, we smashed up the cranberries until they become pureed and the mixture had thickened. Next, we remove from heat and place in the fridge to chill (freezer will work too if needed in a hurry)

Then we started the croquet mixture. We took our leftover turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and corn, then hand mixed it all together

After that, we formed the mixture into balls and coated in egg wash and panko bread crumbs

Lastly, we lightly fried the croquettes in vegetable oil until golden brown (3-4 minutes per side on medium heat). Less or more frying time required depending on the size you make them. Grab the cranberry sauce from the fridge and plate! Bon Appetit!!!

Please feel free to email us and share what you did with your Thanksgiving leftovers this year. We'd love to see pictures too!! Make sure to mention if it's ok for us to share your story here on Bloggie & Dagwood.

Thanks,

Sandy and Andi
